Join Me for a Good Cause

August 23, 2010

It’s been about a year and a half since I joined Twitter, and in that time I’ve managed to connect with some great people in and around the Triad.  At first, I spent a lot of time making connections on my own, but I soon realized that there are some very active social media networking groups in this area.  I was quick to jump at any chance to congregate with fellow social media lovers and talk shop.  One of the newer groups that I’ve started to follow is the Social Media Club of Greensboro.  Though they’ve only had one meeting, they are already making an impact in the Triad.  For example, their first meeting sold out within three days of the event being posted!

This week the SMC of Greensboro is hosting a meet up as part of National Day of Action to benefit the Citizen Gulf project, which seeks to help fishing families find a new, more sustainable future by providing education resources for their children.  Social media clubs from around the country are hosting events on Wednesday, August 25 in an effort to raise money (and awareness) for this program.  All ticket sales and donations from CitizenGulf Day of Action events will give families living in affected areas the extra support they need to get their children off to a great start this school year and to help ease stress on families with after school support services and activities.

I was honored when John Cass asked me to speak at this event, alongside Chuck Hester.  John was even gracious enough to interview both Chuck and myself in order to promote the event.  Chuck is very passionate about Citizen Gulf and you can find out why by reading his interview with John.  Or you can check out my interview with John regarding my experience utilizing social media for non-profits. </shameless plug>

More than anything, you should attend the event on Wednesday.  It’s a chance for you to support a great cause while getting to network with some great people in the Triad.  Visit CitizenGulfNC.eventbrite.com to sign up.

Sorry it took me so long to reply. The event went really well. We raised some money for the cause and everyone seemed to enjoy my speech.
